Herman Harpe, 88, of Valdosta, died on Monday, August 17, 2009 at the Baptist Village Nursing Home in Waycross. He was born on December 3, 1920 in Graves, Georgia to the late Eulon and Clara Belle Walker Harpe and has been a resident of Valdosta since 1974. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant having served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII and went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam as well. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans Organization. Following his retirement he briefly taught at Valdosta Technical College, volunteered many hours with the Soup Kitchen in Valdosta, and served as the Chairman of the Benevolence committee at his church, First Baptist Church in Valdosta. Mr. Harpe had a humble heart, a joyful spirit and selflessly loved and served his neighbors.
Survivors include a son, Mike Harpe of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Spencer Cannon of Atlanta; granddaughters, Ashley and Matt Fuller of Bremerton, WA, Jessie Harpe of Valdosta, and Elizabeth Cannon of Atlanta; a sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Floyd Hudgins of Cordele. Also surviving are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Cotton Naramore of Blakely, Hubert and Cherrie Naramore of Cartersville, James Earl and Faye Naramore of Titusville, FL, and Mervin Harpe of Dawson; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Harpe.
Services for Herman Harpe will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil West and Rev. Mac Weaver officiating. The burial will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
