Herman Alton DeLoach, 92, of Valdosta died Friday, December 25, 2009 at his home after declining health of sometime. He was born on November 4, 1917 and was the last survivor of ten children of the late Thomas and Idolia Guthrie DeLoach of Echols County.
Mr. DeLoach served in the U. S. Army in World War II, being wounded first in his service during the African Campaign under General Patton, then again as one of the thousands of soilders in the Normandy Invasion. Before being wounded during this campaign, he and the members of his division who survived the Invasion fought through Belgium, France and on into Germany. Herman was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and various other medals. His service to his country was one of his proudest moments, although he seldom spoke of those difficult days.
His greatest pleasures were his family and friends, growing a garden as well as his grapes and his pets. He was well known for his keen talents in fishing, hunting and training bird dogs.
Mr. DeLoach is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Vivian I. Morgan DeLoach and his 9 siblings; Abline D. Miller, Edgar DeLoach, Capris DeLoach, Harvey DeLoach, Alberta D. Wilkes, Carey DeLoach, Carrie D. Harris, Flossie D. Cooper and Lawanna D. Parramore.
Survivors include his three daughters, Sandy D. (Jimmy) Griffis of Twin Lakes, GA., Jane D. (Jeff) Key of Milner, GA. and Janet D. Jackson of Valdosta, four grandsons, Christopher D. Griffis of Valdosta, Brett (Tammy) Jackson of Valdosta, Steve (Billie) Jackson of Berrien County and Craig (Eliza) Lyons of Locust Grove, GA., four great grandchildren, Ceridwyn R. Griffis, Rowan B. Griffis both of Pinetta, Fla., Zachary Jackson and Alina Jackson both of Berrien County, a sister in law, Mrs. Maxine M. Parramore of Tallahassee, Fla. and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm, Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Masoleum Chapel with the Rev. John Akers.
