Herbert A. (Lonnie) Abel

Herbert A. (Lonnie) Abel, 84, of Valdosta died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Lake City, Florida. He was born in Enigma, Georgia on September 5, 1923 to the late Lowell Dawson and Nelsie Pickard Abell. He was a retired auto mechanic and a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the European Theatre during World War II as a military policeman. Mr. Abel enjoyed visiting with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved buying and selling scrap iron and looking at his trees.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Lowell and Ann Abel of Valdosta, two daughters, Sandra Smith of Valdosta and Rebecca Beacham of Tucker, GA., grandchildren, Derek Smith of Phoenix, AZ., Heather (Brian) Bishop of Petersburg, VA., Adrienne Smith of Atlanta and Quinn Beacham of Tucker, two great grandchildren, Emma Smith of Phoenix, AZ. and Brady Bishop of Petersburg, VA.., two brothers and sister in law, Julian and Edna Abel of Enigma and Paul Abell of Nokomis, Fla., three sisters and three brothers in law, Mattie and Melvin Robinson of Adel, Ruth and Glaston Phagan of Van Buren, Ark., Ann and Curtis Mayfield of Keystone Heights, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nola Hall Abel, son in law, Mike Beacham, brother and sister in law, James and Odell Abell, sister and brother in law, Nell and Marvin Mathis and a sister in law, Gertie Abell.

Funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, March 21, 2008 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Soper officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethany Hospice or to the Fellowship Home.
