Herbert A. (Herb) Schroer, 92, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the Langdale Hospice House. Born in Columbia County, Florida to the late Frederick William and Julia Schroer, he had been a life-long resident of this area. Mr. Schroer attended Valdosta High School and then graduated from Riverside High School in Gainesville before attending the University of Georgia. Where he received a degree in Specialized Agriculture. Mr. Schroer loved sports having participated in boxing, tennis and football while in high school and college. After his school days, he also developed a love of golf, bowling, and card games such as bridge. Mr. Schroer was a farmer, specializing in plant farming. These crops included tomatoes, peppers, onions and sweet potatoes in the spring and cabbage and collards in the fall, grown on fields primarily in Lowndes, Brooks and Berrien counties. Mr. Schroer was a member and an elder of Twin Lakes Presbyterian Church. He and Wilma his wife of 38 years, loved to travel and took many trips together. He will be remembered by his family as a man who was fearless, whose word was his bond, who did not speak ill of others, and always kept a cigar in his mouth. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Schroer was beloved by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Cardwell Schroer, of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in- law, Martha Kay & David Waldron and Ginger & Ashley Paulk, all of Valdosta; a step-son and step-daughter in law, Bill & Kris Watson, of Valdosta; a sister, Gertrude Schroer Veatch, also of Valdosta; nine grandchildren: Julie (John) Lee, Ashley (Amy) Paulk, III, John (Christy) Waldron, Cara (Brent) Colson, Trav (Sally) Paulk, Buck Alan(Kristy) Paulk, Taylor (Jessie) Wilkins, Leslie (Jeff) Porter, Ginsey (Blaine) Boyer; 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Schroer was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Hawes Schroer; two brothers, Walter F. Schroer, Sr., and Fred Schroer, Jr.; and a special cousin, Albert Schroer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2010, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. John Akers will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
