Harrison Tillman, 82, of Valdosta died Sunday, May 23, 2010. He was born in Valdosta on September 10, 1927 to the late Isaiah Hamilton "Zeke" Tillman and Eloise Little Tillman. After graduating from Valdosta High School, Harrison attended Marion Institute in Alabama, the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated from the University of Georgia with a major in accounting. Harrison was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity serving as the Treasurer during his junior and senior years. He was a lifelong Georgia Bulldog Fan. He achieved his certification as a Certified Public Accountant and practiced in Valdosta for 45 years. He married Mary Mull from Rome, Georgia and they raised five children together. Harrison made time to serve both his church and his community during these active years. He served as a member of the vestry, Senior Warden and Diocesan Convention representative of Christ Episcopal Church. He also served as a lay representative for the Diocese of Georgia to national conventions and was a member of the Standing Liturgical Commission of the Episcopal Church from 1972- 1980. In the community, he was active with the Boys and Girls Club and the Boy Scouts and as a founding Board Member and Treasurer of Valwood School. In later years, he was a charter member of the local SAR(Sons of the American Revolution) Chapter in Lowndes County, assisting many local families in tracing their heritage. He served The Valdosta Chapter as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Registrar and Genealogist. From 2002 to 2004, he served the Georgia Society for SAR as Southwest Regional Vice President and he also served on the state society's Audit Committee. He recently received the Patriot Medal from the National Society for his years of service to SAR. During these years he also served on the vestry and as Treasurer of St. James Episcopal Church in Quitman, Georgia, assisting in the move of the historical church building and the addition of a parish hall.
Mr. Tillman is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth McDonald Mull Tillman of Hahira, Ga; a brother, I. H. "Bubber" Tillman & sister-in-law Mary Ellen Tillman of Hahira, Ga; daughter, Mary Eloise Tillman Bowers and son-in- law, D.H. "Buzz" Bowers of Tega Cay, S C; son, Joseph Harrison Tillman, Sr. and daughter-in- law Pamela K. Tillman of Hahira, Ga; daughter, Sarah Belinda "Bonnie" Tillman Shealy and son-in-law L. Mack Shealy of Augusta, Ga; son, H. Harrison Tillman, Jr. and daughter-in-law Janice Holly Loeffler, MD of Valdosta, Ga; daughter, Cordelia "Dede" Tillman Leon and son-in-law David Anthony Leon of Hahira, Ga; grandchildren, Mary Rebecca Bowers Conners & husband Joseph Lamont Conners, Jr, Sara Elizabeth Bowers Tintle & husband Sean Christopher Tintle, Rev Joseph Harrison Tillman, Jr & wife Melanie H. Tillman, Eric Matthew Tillman & wife Emily R. Tillman, Kelsey Elizabeth Tillman, Kaleb Tillman, Belinda Elizabeth Shealy Beatty & husband Kip Jason Beatty, Anna Cordelia Shealy Abbott & husband Justin Ryan Abbott, Robert Harrison Tillman, Stephanie Holly Tillman, Mary Elizabeth Leon Crouso & husband Timothy Ryan Crouso, Stephen Tillman Leon, Christina Belmonte Leon; great grand children, Abigail Catherine Conners, Grace Elizabeth Conners, Luke Samuel Tillman, Koby Tyler Beatty and Kaden Colt Beatty.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph H. Tillman, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
