Helen Young Bates Wright
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Helen Young Bates Wright, 87, of Valdosta died on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at the Glenmoor Health Center in St. Augustine, FL where she has lived for the past three years. Born in Langdale, AL on May 1, 1917, she was the daughter of John and Allie Gene Young. As an infant, following her mother’s death, she moved to Columbus, GA where she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Hugh and Emma Lee (Tee) Bates.
Mrs. Wright graduated from the St. Louis Institute of Music in 1935 and was awarded a scholarship for advanced study in Germany. In 1939 she traveled to London, England to study the piano. She was married to James Arthur Wright. In 1957, they moved to Valdosta where she was active in the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed many community activities including the symphony and book review club.
Mrs. Wright is survived by her daughter, Helen E. (Genie) Wright of Washington, DC; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Angelina Wright of Jacksonville Beach, FL; her grandson, John Wright, Jr. of Jacksonville Beach, FL and her cousin, James Trice of Lake Junaluska, NC. She is predeceased by her husband, James A. Wright and her half brother, John Young, Jr.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2005 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. James Trice officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Altar Guild of the First United Methodist Church of Valdosta.
