Helen Woodward Gayle

Helen Woodward Gayle, 92, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at her residence following a brief illness. She was born in Valdosta on June 14, 1917 to the late John Capers Woodward Sr. and Mary Prince Woodward. She retired after 20 years from Valdosta Federal Savings and loan as Vice-President. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Valdosta where she had taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Adult 5 Sunday School Class. Mrs. Gayle was also actively involved in other organizations such as the WMU, D.A.R., the Book Review, Chi Omega Alumni Association, and the Valdosta Country Club where she was a member of the Ladies Golf Association.

She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Jack Gayle, Jr. of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, John and Peggy Gayle also of Valdosta; grandchildren and their spouses, Helen and Brad Lastinger of Athens, Jarrett and Neil Anderson of Wilmington, North Carolina, John Woodward, Jr. and Catherine Gayle of Valdosta; great-grandchildren, Gracyn Lastinger, Bradley Lastinger, Elliott Anderson, Smith Anderson, and Mary Grace Anderson; brother and sister-in-law, J.C. and Mary Francis Woodward, and a sister, Mary Beth Watkins all of Valdosta; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Stanaland.

Services for Helen Woodward Gayle will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil West officiating. The burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
