Helen T. Marks (nee` Oeters) died on Thursday, February 9, 2006 in Quitman, after a short illness. She was born October 14, 1920, to the late Harold and Helen Hine Oeters, and she was proud to be a “Brooklynite.” She graduated from Girls Commercial High School and was an English major at Wilson College. During WWII, she worked in Washington, D.C., where she met her late husband Louis S. Marks. They married in 1944.
A devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed reading, collecting postcards, and traveling with her husband. As a faithful Catholic, she was an active member of the Church of the Nativity in Burke, Virginia, and the Bellarmine Guild at St. Joseph’s University.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Dennis Marks, emeritus Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences at Valdosta State University, and his wife, Patricia, emeritus Regents’ Distinguished Professor of English and Deacon at Christ Episcopal Church, Valdosta; her daughters Helen Marks Dicks, Esq., Barbara Jane Wrigley, and Dr. Patricia Nancy Marks; and two grandsons, Drew DiFonzo Marks and Philip Wrigley.
The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 12, at Carson McLane Funeral Home, with a mass at St. John’s at 12:10 on Monday, February 13, with Father John O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
