Helen Myree Joiner Thomas, 90, of Valdosta, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012 at her home. Born in Valdosta, Georgia on March 17, 1922, she was the only daughter of the late John Gordon and Lorene Cox Joiner. She was a member of First Christian Church of Valdosta and graduated from Valdosta High School. She attended Middle Georgia College and worked at Moody Field and in Atlanta, Georgia before her marriage to John Wesley Thomas in 1950. They lived in various locations throughout their years together. In 1990, they made their home in Valdosta, Georgia. They have been members of First Methodist Church and FMC Christian Homebuilders Sunday School Class since that time.
Survivors are her husband, John Wesley Thomas, four daughters and sons-in-law: Terri Thomas of Beaufort, North Carolina, Debbie and Keith Hotard of Houston, Texas, Betty and Arthur Barham of Lake Park, Georgia, and Sharon and Dee DeShazo of Orlando, Florida; seven grandchildren, Britt Viehman of St. Pete Beach, Florida, Shay (Ryan) Neve of Beaufort, North Carolina, Rachel Hotard of San Antonio, Texas, David Hotard of Atlanta, Georgia, Brad Barham of Chicago, Illinois, Sara Barham of Valdosta, Georgia, Wesley DeShazo of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Elliott Neve and Emerson Neve of Beaufort, North Carolina. She is also survived by two brothers, Henry (Viva) Joiner of Valdosta, Georgia and Buford (Miriam) Joiner of Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, John Gordon (Dorothy) Joiner of Macon, Georgia.
Services for Helen Thomas will be held at Carson McLane Funeral Home on Friday, November 23rd at 1:00 PM with her niece Reverend Lynn Lane officiating and assisted by Reverend John McGowan. Internment will take place at Sunset Hill Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
