Helen Fields

On November 18, 2023, Helen Virginia Zeigler Fields (“MeMe”), age 85 of Tuscaloosa, AL went to be with the Lord. For 61 years she was a wonderful and devoted wife to her beloved husband, Joyce Fisher Fields (“the Colonel”). She was an amazing mother and an adoring grandmother. Helen was a faithful servant of the Lord and a member of Brookwood Baptist Church in Birmingham.

Born and raised in Valdosta, GA, Helen had a generous heart and learned a strong work ethic from her amazing parents. She was her high school’s valedictorian and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State College. She worked for Eastman Kodak Corporation before marrying her high school sweetheart in 1961. She spent the next part of her life being a mother and an Army officer’s wife. She went on to work for the Institute for Women Executives at the University of Alabama in the 1980s before moving to Saudi Arabia where she served as the wife of a diplomat. She was passionate about loving and serving others. She shared her God-given talents generously. She strove for excellence in all that she did.

She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth (Gregg) Hahn, Jennifer (Todd) Bell, and Jessica Fields (Chris Rusnak); grandchildren Robert and Caroline Amason; Cooper, Audra and Sofia Bell, Paul (Caitlin) Hahn, Thomas Hahn, and Sydney Rusnak; sister Shirley Greene (Ed Sanders) and brother Jack (Leera) Zeigler.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lois Zeigler; her husband, Joyce Fisher Fields, her sisters Emily Gandy and Sue Cox; and her brothers John and Eugene Zeigler.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Helen’s devoted caregivers - Crystal Mostiller and Mary Bates.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel. The family will have a private graveside service prior to the funeral service.
