Harriett Ryan Hester

April 26, 1945 — September 2, 2013

Harriett Ryan Hester, 68, of Valdosta died on Monday, September 2, 2013 at the Langdale Hospice House following a long battle with cancer. She was born on April 26, 1945 in Tifton, Georgia to the late Lawrence and Virginia Tolbert Ryan. She lived in Tallahassee, Florida during her youth. She graduated from Florida High School in the class of 1963 then worked at Florida State University as a secretary in the admissions office. Harriett married Charles (Joe) Hester on April 24, 1965. For over 39 years, she delivered meals to shut-ins with the Break Bread Together program with her friend Julia Ariail She was a homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, true friend and business partner.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles Joseph III and Lynda Hester of Valdosta; two granddaughters, Breanna K. Hester and Emma G. Hester both of Valdosta; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. James K. and Sally Hester of Cairo, Georgia; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Viza and Paul Dirks of Tallahassee, Florida; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Cathy Kurpis of Valdosta, Marsh Ryan; several nieces and nephews, Kelly Hester, Jeff Hester, Darla McCray, Denise Dirks, Trey Dirks, Richard and Sherry Kurpis, Bobby Ryan, Leslie Ryan and Kevin Ryan; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Joseph Hester, Jr.

Mrs. Harriett Ryan Hester will be cremated according to her wishes. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The burial will be private.
