Harriet Thompson Smith

Harriet Thompson Smith, 83, of Valdosta, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Southeast Georgia Health System, Brunswick Campus.

She was born July 31, 1930 in Beverly, MA, a daughter of the late Ross Winfield and Drucilla Allen Thompson. She graduated from Hood College, Frederick, MD, and earned her Masters Degree at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA. For ten years Mrs. Smith was employed as an Analytical Chemist for the U.S. Government.

Mrs. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Valdosta, and was also a past President of the Junior Service League and a volunteer with the Reach to Recovery program for the American Cancer Society for twenty years.

She is survived by her three children, Jennifer Stuart Smith of St. Simons Island, Thomas Harding Smith III and wife Elizabeth of Appling, GA, Ross Winfield Smith and wife Kelly of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Justin Thomas Smith, Townes Harding Smith, Ella Louise Smith, Harriet Grayson Smith and Ross Winfield Smith, Jr.; and one sister, Nancy Thompson Rideout of Paris Hill, ME. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Smith, Jr., M.D.

Graveside Services for Harriet will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24th at Sunset Hill Cemetery, with Reverend John Akers officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 23rd at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
