Harold Gilbert "Gil" Gjertsen

Harold Gilbert "Gil" Gjertsen, 84 of Valdosta, Georgia died on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Valdosta on Saturday, January 30th at 2:00 pm. The internment will take place in the Church Memorial Gardens.

Gil was born at home in Amityville, New York on October 9th, 1931. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Emil Gjertsen in 1960, his mother, Ebba Olson Gjertsen in 1984 and his wife Natalie DeGraw Gjertsen in 2014. He has one sister, Gloria Viola Holmes, who currently resides in Conyers, Georgia. Gil was the beloved husband and best friend of Natalie DeGraw Gjertsen whom he married in 1958. Gil was the father of five children, Chip Gjertsen, Abbie (Darek) Stennes, Alexandra (Robert) Bradshaw, Douglas (Sandy) Gjertsen and Stephanie (Randall) Johnson and nine grandchildren.

He attended Ohio State University on a swimming scholarship. Gil served his country from 1951-1955 in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He spent the majority of his career in the forestry products industry. Gil and Natalie moved to Valdosta in 1999, where it became a community he dearly loved and considered his home. He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made on Gil's behalf to Christ Episcopal Church or the Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta, Georgia.
