Gordon E. Mayer, 50, of Valdosta, died on Friday, Feb 10, 2006 after a brief illness. He was born on December 24, 1955 in Valdosta to the late Leonard H. & Mattie Ruth Mayer. Gordon attended Leila Ellis and Sallas-Mahone Elementary School as a child, graduating from Lowndes High School. He furthered his education at Valdosta Vocational Technical School, continuing with an associate’s degree at Valdosta State University. Gordon was employed by Southern Company for 30 years. He faithfully attended Grace Baptist Church in Valdosta, actively serving as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. There he became endeared to many. Gordon’s kindness and benevolence will be remembered and sorely missed by all those with whom he was associated.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Rebecca Harrell Mayer, of Valdosta, two sons and daughters in law, Daryle & Ann Mayer of Great Falls, MT, and Shawn & Ashley Mayer of Valdosta; a daughter and son in law, Tabitha and Brandon Walden of Griffin; three brothers and sisters in law, Bobby & Patricia Mayer, of Valdosta, Nicholas & Serene Miller, of Lake Park, Hank & Anita Mayer, of Lake Park, mother in law, Ann Harrell, of Windermere, brother in law, John W. Harrell, of Windermere, FL; and four grandchildren, Madeleine, Logan, Breanna and Johnathan Mayer. Also surviving are two aunts and an uncle, Myrtice and Lossie Boyd, of Lakeland, and Jacqueline Hackle Smith, of Atlanta; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mayer is preceded in death by his father in law, John Harrell, and an uncle Raymond Smith.
Funeral Services for Mr. Mayer will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2006 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. J. Dean Spivey and Rev. Bob Willis will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
