G. W. Colson Jr., 88, of Valdosta, was called home by the Lord on August 14, 2009. Born in Lowndes County on September 17, 1920, he was the son of the late George W. Colson and Willie Mae Becton Colson.
Mr. Colson served in the United States Air Force as a Sergeant for four years. Stationed in Italy during World War II he received a medal for European African Middle Eastern Services with one Silver Star and two Bronze Stars, a distinguished unit badge, and a good conduct medal.
After the war, he moved to Warner Robins and worked at Robins AFB. He then returned home to Lowndes County to work at Moody AFB Civil Services. Mr. Colson retired from Civil Service. He was also the owner of the Bemiss grocery store and developed Academy Acres Subdivision. A member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, he served in various church leadership positions and was active in the Fellowship Sunday School class.
Survivors are his wife of 67 years, Myrtice Adams Colson of Valdosta, two sons and three daughters-in-law; Larry and Pat Colson; Greg and Cheryl Colson; and Valerie Colson; a brother, Calvin Colson of Quitman; grandchildren, Todd and Lisa Hatcher, Brent and Cara Colson, Brad Colson, Allison and David Gracey; Rachel and Steve Blankenship, Hunter Colson; great grandchildren, Trace Colson; Ellen Colson, Cole Colson, Julia Colson, Tate Colson, Davis Hatcher, and Caroline Hatcher; two sisters in law, Catherine Colson Corbett and Catherine Adams both of Valdosta He is preceded in death by his son, G. Wally Colson, a brother, Bill Colson and a brother in law, Carlton Adams.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Park Avenue United Methodist Church. Reverend Willie Beasley will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 6- 8 p.m. Mr. Colson's grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Park Avenue United Methodist Church or the American Lung Association.
