George R. Bell

March 9, 1928 — September 20, 2008

George R. Bell, 80, of Valdosta, died suddenly on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born in Lee County, AL to the late Bowden Edward and Lurleen Avant Bell, and formerly of Salem, AL, Mr. Bell had lived here for the past two years. Mr. Bell grew up in and around Auburn and Opelika, AL and worked as a soda jerk in the 1930's in Auburn. He served in the U. S. Army in Germany following WW II as a MP patrolling the Autobahn. Mr. Bell worked as a heavy construction superintendent for Wright Associates Inc. for over 50 years and he loved horses and was an accomplished horseman. He was a member of Central Avenue Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Virginia (Jenn) Bell, of Valdosta; five daughters and four sons in law, Crystal & Walter Collier, of Waverly, TN, Sylvia & Bill Emfinger, of Montgomery, AL, Susan Lane of Valdosta, Carolyn & Lyle Gillis of Biloxi, MS, Linda & Mack Southwell, of Glenville, GA; a son and daughter in law, James & Debbe Johnson of Clearwater, FL. Also surviving is a sister, Margaret Bates of Los Angeles, CA; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; two sisters in law, Kathleen Anderson of Sevierville, TN and Carolyn Van Matre of Valdosta; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceeded in death by his brother, Bowden Edward Bell, Jr.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Bell will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Copeland Cemetery. Mr. Bryan Jarvis will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening, Monday, from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Pearlman Cancer Center at South Georgia Medical Center, 2501 N.
