George M. Johnson

George M. Johnson, Jr., 73, of Valdosta, died on November 14, 2017 at his residence. He was born on April 11, 1944 in Savannah to the late George M. Sr. and Beatrice Donahue Johnson. Mr. Johnson grew up in Elberton, Ga and graduated from High School there. He went on to attend West Georgia College and the University of Georgia. In the early 1970’s he moved to Florida and began a business that manufactured and distributed contact lenses, Professional Contacts, Inc. The headquarters were in Orlando, and he operated it for 27 years until he sold the business in the mid 2000’s. He continued to work for them until his retirement in 2009. After retirement, he moved to his home in Kinderlou. Mr. Johnson was a big fan of University of Georgia Bulldog Football. While in Orlando, he served as president of the Central Florida Georgia Bulldog Club. Golf was also a favorite pastime. He loved to play at Kinderlou and at Lake Nona with his friends and watch the Masters each year in Augusta. He also had a passion for collecting old cars. Mr. Johnson attended church at the Kinderlou Chapel.
Survivors include a daughter, Kim Johnson, with John Lake, of Los Angeles, CA; a son and daughter in law, Greg & Diane Johnson of Chicago, IL; a sister and brother in law, Beatrice & Gray Sloop of Cheraw, SC; five grandchildren, Vivienne Lake & Oona Lake, both of Los Angeles, Gavin Johnson, Dylan Johnson and Devin Johnson, all of Chicago. Also surviving are three nephews, Gray Sloop, Mike Sloop and Phil Sloop and a large extended family of friends in his neighborhood, at the Golf Course and those rooting for the ‘Dawgs’.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Johnson at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Kinderlou Chapel. Rev. Donnie Warren will officiate.
