George Henry Hart, Jr., 88, Valdosta resident since 1959, died on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on February 28, 1928, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of the late George Henry Hart and Margaret Cecile Thompson Hart. He grew up in Brookline, Mass, graduating from Brookline High School in the late 1940's. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from Boston University with a degree in Public Relations. While attending college he worked in the Department of Recreation in Brookline. After graduation he moved to New York City and worked in the advertising business. Moving to Valdosta, he worked with his father-in-law, R .L. Parramore, in the wholesale oil business. In the late 1970's, he became the Justice of the Peace in Lowndes County and went on to serve as Magistrate Judge before retiring in 2003. He continued working as the Judge in Remerton until he was 85 years of age.
Very active in the community, he served as Chairman of the American Red Cross, President of the Lions Club, President of the Valdosta Jaycees, Chairman of the Arts Commission and President of the Boy's Club. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and the Italian American Club. George was very social and loved being with people. He was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, was a member of the Parish Council and the St. John's School Board.
Survivors are his wife of 61 years, Lilla Kate Hart of Valdosta; sons and daughters- in- law, George H. III, and Nancy Hart of Macon, William R. (Bill) Hart of Valdosta, Edward and Karen Hart of Dallas, Texas; daughters- in- law, Judy S. Hart of Valdosta, Bonita A. Hart of Perry, Florida, Sheila Sayers of Perry, Florida; grandchildren, John (Erin) Hart, II of Perry, Florida, Michael Hart, Sean Hart, both of Macon, James Hart of Dallas, Texas, step grandchildren, Amanda (Joe) Miles , Valdosta, Craig (Amy) Hunt, Greenville, SC, Erika (Chris) Grambling and Mallory Nettles, Perry Florida; a great grandchild, eight step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, John Remer Hart and Redden Parramore Hart and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 12:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Brian LaBurt and Father Dan O'Connell will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. A prayer service will be held on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. at St. Johns with visitation in the church until 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Catholic School Library, 800 Gornto Rd., Valdosta, GA 31602.
