George G. Murrah, Jr., 89 of Valdosta, died on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Fellowship Nursing Home. Born in Richland, GA to the late George G. & Lurlie Pearce Murrah and formerly of Zanesville, OH, Mr. Murrah is a retired Pharmacist and had lived in this area for the past 22 years. Mr. Murrah graduated from Samford University with his Pharmacy degree before entering the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was attached as a Navy Corpsman to the First Marine Division, which served at Guadalcanal; he was later awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action for heroism. In 1973 he was declared Pharmacist of the Year in Ohio, participated in the Bowl of Hygeia of the Ohio Pharmaceutical Association in 1984, a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Shrine Club, a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Ohio Pharmaceutical Association. Mr. Murrah was also involved with the National Community Association, the American Legion and the Kiwanis club, the Camellia and Hemeacallis Societies, and the Withlacoochee Watchers Conservation Association. He was a member of First Christian Church and served his church as a Deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Emme Stevens Murrah; two daughters & sons in law, Lynne & Jim Schmitt of Phoenix, AZ, Nancy & Tim Hall, Tucson, AZ; one son & daughter in law, Jodie & Vickie Stevens of Valdosta; seven beloved grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister & brother in law, Mary Helen & Echols Mayo of Melbourne, FL; sisters in law, Ruth Murrah and Betty Ann Murrah of Richland; several nieces & nephews. Mr. Murrah was preceded in death by his wife, Serite Burley Murrah, the mother of his daughters, his parents, George G. Murrah & Lurlie Pearce Murrah, two brothers, Frank Murrah & Mott Murrah.
Funeral services for Mr. Murrah will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 in the Chapel of the Carson McLane funeral home with Dr. Milton West and Rev. George LaHood officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2007.
