George B. Eager
"A life well-lived"

George Bruce Eager, 90 years old, was born to Mr. and Mrs. William G. Eager in Valdosta on April 4, 1921. He died on April 3, 2012 in time to celebrate his 91st birthday with his Savior and his precious wife of nearly 68 years.

His goal in life was to be well-pleasing to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and we believe he was welcomed into the presence of the Lord with "well done thou good and faithful servant."

George and Laura Brownell were married on May 19, 1942 and had six children. Mr. Eager was a war hero, having served the US Navy aboard the USS Portland during fierce battles, including the worst night battle of the Pacific at Guadalcanal in November 1942.

Both George and Laura came to know Christ personally, after the tragic death of their eldest son, Brucie, in 1953. Soon after, George & Laura began a half century of ministry in the schools of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, sharing the Gospel message with over a million children and young people. In 1965, seeing the need for follow-up to this thriving school ministry, the Lord led them to found The Mailbox Club. Today, over 30 million Mailbox Club lessons are printed annually for needy children in 80 or more nations around the world. These Christ-centered Bible lessons are provided free of charge to the boys and girls.

Mr. Eager was first and foremost a "lover of Jesus Christ." The secret of his fruitful, abundant life was daily, extended quiet times with God, seeking to know Him better through prayer, Bible study and Scripture memory. Out of a full cup, he loved his wife and was the best Dad ever to his children. He was self-effacing, humble and godly! One of the greatest legacy he leaves his family is how he adored and lovingly served his wife through the last four years of her life, as she suffered with Alzheimer's. Never have we seen a man care so much for his sick wife, without one word of complaining. He considered it a privilege.

He loved the Lord and yearned for people, especially children, to know Christ and become life-long followers of Him. His well-worn Bible is a reflection of his daily passion to know Christ better. His life was all about endless service for Christ in obscurity. He cared not for man's praise. His consistent example of being "sold out" to Christ as well as a lifetime of love and intercession for others leaves us with very big shoes to fill and heavy hearts, as we miss him dearly.
George is survived by five loving children, James. B. & Harriet Eager, Katharine E. Sherman, David W. Eager, Peggy E. Castro, John Mark & Carrie Eager, 14 grandchildren, who adored their grand-father, and 6 great-grandchildren.

All are invited to attend the funeral service, planned for 10:30 am on Saturday, April 7, at Crossroads Baptist Church in Valdosta, with the viewing from 5-7 pm on Friday at McLane Funeral home. It is befitting that his funeral service is planned for Resurrection weekend as we celebrate our risen Savior and a life well lived! The burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Valdosta.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be pleased with gifts in honor of George Eager to go to The Mailbox Club, 404 Eager Road, Valdosta, Ga, 31602, www.mailboxclub.org. All donations will be used to provide Mailbox Club Bible lessons to thousands of unreached boys & girls throughout this year.
