Gene D King

Gene D. King, 79, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Langdale Hospice House. Born in Fayetteville, TN on April 25, 1936 to the late Albert B & Edna Brown King, he had lived in this area for the past 14 years. When Mr. King was in the 6th grade, the family moved to Chattanooga where he graduated from City High School in 1954. During high school, Mr. King was an avid sportsman, competing in football, track, baseball and basketball. He set several track records at City High that stood until the current decade. He then went into the United States Air Force where he served for 4 years. After his military service he went to work for American National Bank in Chattanooga, which eventually became Sun Trust Bank. He worked for Sun Trust and retired after 39 years, in 1994. Mr. King was an active member of Crossroads Baptist Church, where he loved serving his Lord. He continued to love sports throughout his life, as a devoted Tennessee Volunteer and Atlanta Braves fan. Fishing with friends was also a favorite pastime for him.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Paula King of Valdosta; a daughter and son in law, Kathy & Craig Underhill of Ringgold; a son and daughter in law, David & Debbie King of Chickamauga; a daughter, Karen Ellis of Chattanooga and a son and daughter in law, Brent & Brandy King of Valdosta. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother in law, Louise & Les Stitt and Jewel Talley, all of Chattanooga, TN and two brothers and a sister in law, Jim & Carolyn King of Chattanooga and Joe King of Cleveland, TN, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert King.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. King at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Crossroads Baptist Church. Dr. Ken Alford will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.
