Frances Leona Carter Upchurch

Frances Leona Carter Upchurch, 82, of Valdosta, died on Monday, September 12, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center following a short illness. She was born in Valdosta on March 11, 1929 to the late Hiram Mark and Pearl Storey Carter. She attended ABAC and the University of Georgia where she received her Bachelor degree in Education. She retired from the Lowndes County School system having taught for 31 years. Following her retirement, she worked for the United States Postal Service for several years. Mrs. Upchurch was a member at Airport Church of Christ. Leona loved and was loved by her family, church family and friends as well as her dogs Cindy, Sammie and Lucy. She also loved working in her yard, fishing, and raising cows. She also loved sharing the Braves games with her brother, Pafford.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Nat and Tina Harris of St. Simons; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Brandi Upchurch; daughter and son-in-law, Fran Upchurch and her husband Irvin Coody and a son and daughter-in-law, Leb and Debbie Upchurch all of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and James Moore of Lake Park; eight grandchildren, Nat Harris, Jr. of New Jersey, Shannon and Chris Wood of Augusta, Katherine Upchurch and her fiancé, J.T. Barrs, Sarah Moore and her companion Jarod Figueroa, Taylor Upchurch, Paul Moore, Maggie Moore, Allison Moore, and Isabella Leona Upchurch all of Valdosta; 2 great-grandsons, Brennon Barrs of Valdosta and J. Emerson Harris of New Jersey; a brother and sister-in-law, Pafford and Debbie Carter of Lake Park; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Flora and Chuck Warren of Virginia, Susie and Roy Hooper of Phoenix, Arizona, Shirley and Wallace Davis, and Pearley and Walter Davis all of Shreveport, LA; sisters-in-law, Patsy Upchurch of Valdosta, Margaret Newton of Millen, Georgia, Carolyn Upchurch of Charleston, South Carolina and Greta Garter of Gainesville, Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband, William Thomas Upchurch, Sr. and a son William Thomas Upchurch, Jr., and numerous brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Services for Leona Upchurch will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2011 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Keith Olbricht and Mr. Bill Newcomb officiating. The burial will follow in the Hickory Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
