Floyd M. (Gene) Coody

FLOYD M. (GENE) COODY, 74, of Valdosta, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Gene was born October 26, 1935, a son of Coyedell Coody, and was raised by his grandparents, the late James Barney Coody, Sr. and Annie Lou Zipperer Coody. He had faithfully served in the U.S. Air Force. Gene had retired in 1987 from Phelps-Dodge in Arizona where he worked in an open copper, returned to Valdosta in 1988, and worked at Scruggs Asphalt Plant until his retirement in 2000.

He was a devoted member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Bobbie Ann James Coody of Valdosta; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Gregory and Emma Coody of Tucson, AZ, and Scott F. and Annalisa Coody of Chandler, AZ; six grandchildren, Daniel and wife Laura Coody, Matthew Coody, all of Tucson, AZ, Nolan, Benjamin, Ryan and Audrey Coody, all of Chandler, AZ; one great-grandson, Dillon Coody of Tucson, AZ; one step-daughter, Deborah Michelle Rebenack of Valdosta; one step-son, H. Lee Mathis and wife Julie of Jacksonville, FL; five step-grandchildren, Jennifer Rebenack of Valdosta, Matthew Rebenack of Gainesville, FL, Siobhan Rebenack, Michelle Orndorff and Cody Mathis, all of Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Lauralene and Ray Kennedy of Southwick. MA, Patsy Cowart of Valdosta, and Susan Higginbotham of Biloxi, MS; one brother, Timothy Hooker of Macon; special aunt, Annie Jewell Brown Galarneau of Valdosta; three sister-in-laws, Sandy and husband Keith Barfield of Naylor, Brenda James of Valdosta, and Penny Kelly of Nashville; five brother-in-laws, Louis and Patricia James of Cairo, Jimmy and Suree James of Valdosta, Sammy and Marie James of Valdosta, Benny and Barbara James of Valdosta, and Danny and Pam James of Atlanta; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother; a sister, Vicki Combass; and brothers, Robert Hooker and Archie Hooker.

Funeral Services for Mr. Coody will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, with Rev. Nate Lehman and Rev. George Masciarilli officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Mr. Coody’s family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm.
