Floyce Vickers Tillman, 89, of Valdosta died Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at the Langdale Hospice House. She was born on July 4, 1922 to pioneer parents, Burk Auley Vickers and Sulula Lehman Vickers in Lowndes County near Hahira. Floyce enjoyed talking about her great, great, great grandfather who was one of the first four original founders of Lowndes County. She had ten sisters and one brother. Mrs. Tillman was a 1940 graduate of Hahira High School.
Floyce was a charter member of Crossroads Baptist Church having been an active member of Lee Street Baptist Church since 1951 before Crossroads founding.
While her husband Mac was away as a paratrooper in WWII, she and her daughter lived with Mrs. Rilla Hall in Hahira. Floyce worked at Moody Air Force Base packing parachutes during this time. After her husband's military service, they lived in Columbia, South Carolina for approximately 8 years and then returned home to Valdosta. Floyce said many times "there's no place like home". Floyce retired after 26 years working for the Georgia Power Company.
Survivors include two daughters and sons in law, Maxine T. and Joe Kendrick of Tallahassee, Fla., SuBeth T. and Bill Garland of Valdosta, grandchildren, Robert (Renea) Kendrick, Jennifer (Ken) Sasser, Casey (Wes) Kennedy, Cy Garland, Gladys Garland, Chris (Amanda) Garland, 7-great grandchildren, Ashley and John Sasser, Jack and Lex Kennedy, Garrett and Warren Garland and Alexia Solis, four sisters, Alma Shirley, Katherine Sims, Peggy Canady and June (Evans) Rambo, sister in law, Roberta Sharpless as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mac Tillman, her sisters, Maggie Green, Willie Voight, Merle Wicker, Lillian Barr, Virginia Gadd, Martha Josheff and her brother, David L. Vickers.
Funeral services will be held at 4pm, Friday, June 29, 2012 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Scarbrough and Rev. Dexter Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday from 3-4pm at the funeral home.
