Florence Christine Weldon, 86, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born on May 20, 1920 in Brooks County to the late Thomas Gettis Dampier and Sankie Annie Cooper Dampier, she had been a lifelong resident of this area. Beginning in the 1940’s, Mrs. Weldon worked for several years at the King Edward Cigar Factory and later worked for several years at the Strickland Cotton Mill in Remerton. She was a dedicated Christian and a member of Forrest Street Church of God where she was a member of the Senior Citizens group and active with the Girls Club there. Mrs. Weldon was a very giving person and ministered for several years to people at convalescent homes with crafts and baked goods before her eyesight prevented her from continuing. During and after these times of ministry she had an active prayer ministry for these people and other she met.
Survivors include her daughter and son in law, Lawana & Leo (Sr.) Soileau, of Valdosta; three sons and two daughters in law, Harmon & Frances Weldon of Valdosta, Tommy Weldon of Jacksonville and Bobby & Joyce Weldon of Lakeland; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Christine Hughes, Cindy (Marty) Burkhalter, Leo Jr. (Beverly) Soileau, Sankie (Jimmy) Hornbuckle, Michael (CeCe) Weldon, Miranda (Jack) Sanders, Lawana Renee (Kevin) Jackson, Wesley (Teri) Weldon, Pam Weldon & Tracy (Matt) Schwab; a sister, Malvena Herring of Tallahassee, 14 great grandchildren and dear friends, Cookie Durham & Carolyn Jean Brady. She is preceded in death by her husband Harmon D. Weldon.
Funeral services for Mrs. Weldon will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at Forrest Street Church of God. Rev. Wayne Hughes and Mr. Patrick Linahan will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening, Monday, February 26, 2007 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Girls Club at Forrest Street Church of God at 1901 N.
