Fitzhugh Huston Oliver, 94, of Valdosta died on Friday, July 9, 2010, after a lengthy illness. Born in Newton, Alabama, on October 30, 1915, Mr. Oliver was the son of the late James Franklin and Ida Bell Brown Oliver. He spent his childhood in Ocoee, Florida, near Orlando, and played football as a receiver and defensive back for Ocoee High School. After high school he worked briefly as a carpenter. He then joined the army and fought in the Pacific during WW II and was the recipient of 4 Bronze Stars. Following his military service, Mr. Oliver worked as a forest ranger for 30 years with the Florida Division of Forestry. Upon his retirement from the Forestry Division he moved to the Valdosta area where he built homes for several years.
Survivors are his wife of 65 years, Sadie Oliver of Valdosta, daughter and son in law, Marjorie and Jerry Trammel of Vacaville, California, son and daughter in law, Stephen Oliver and Teresia Bradford of Palmetto, Florida; grandchildren, Kyrie (Chris) Delgado of Vacaville, California, Michelle (Bebe) DeLaTorre of Winters, California, Chris Molloy of Petaluma, California, Shawn Molloy of Novato, California, Jason Michael (Melissa) Oliver, David Houston (Jessica) Oliver of Plant City, Florida; 11 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by 3 brothers and a sister, including Fred Oliver and Benny Oliver.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church. Reverend Garvie Nichols will officiate. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N.
