Fern Russell Allen

Fern R. Allen, 83, of Ray City, died on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at his home. Born in Sevierville, Tennessee, on January 16, 1924, he was the son of the late Dayton and Edith Allen. He had made his home in Lowndes County since 1957. Mr. Allen was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years receiving medals too numerous to mention. Mr. Allen was a member of the VFW, Fellowship Daylight Lodge # 748, was a Ham Radio Operator and a Red Cross Volunteer. A Mason for more than 50 years, he was Past Master of Moody Lodge #719. Mr. Allen worked with the Boys Club Little League Teams and his favorite pastime was woodworking, fishing and spending time with his best friend, Eddie Crowe. He was employed with Civil Service at Moody Air Force Base for 15 years. Until his health failed he was an active and faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife of 58 years, Mabel D. Allen of Ray City; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Roxann Allen of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; daughter, Gwendolyn Allen of Snellville, GA., a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Willie Oertel of Farmville, Virginia and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2007, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Steven Kegley will officiate and a eulogy will be given by Joe Crow. Masonic Rites and Military Honors and burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Diabetes Foundation, Arthritis Foundation and Alzheimers Research Foundation.
