Evelyn Fender, 71, of Lake Park, died on Monday, April 2, 2007 at South Georgia Medical Center after a sudden illness. Mrs. Fender had lived in this area for 53 years and was formerly of Fitzgerald. Born on June 25, 1935 in Ben Hill County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Beatrice West Young. She was a homemaker and later worked for the Lowndes County Board of Education at Lake Park Elementary School. Prior to her working there she was a volunteer crossing guard at Lake Park Elementary, worked in the lunchroom and was very active in PTA. Mrs. Fender was the hospitality chairperson and charter member of the Lake Park Historical Society. An avid gardener, she and her husband were known for their daylilies and other flowers. She was always eager to assist families during times of bereavement. Evelyn was a member of Antioch Church.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jesse (J.E.) Fender of Lake Park; sons and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Lisa Fender of Pelham, Carl Fender of Valdosta; daughter, Bonnie Rocheleau of Lake Park; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Larry Barnes of Cordele, Linda and Steve Griffin of Fitzgerald; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lowell and Mary Ann Young of Valdosta, Kenny and Sue Young of Fitzgerald; grandchildren, Scott Fender of Lake Park; Jesse Michael Fender, Kelly Marie Fender both of Thomasville; Bazlyn (Brent) Lewis of Cumming, Amber McGilvray, Stevie McGilvray of Valdosta; great grandchildren, Ryder Fender, Dakota Fender both of Lake Park, Haley J. Jackson of Valdosta; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jessie Dwight Young, sister, Doris Poore and son-in-law, Michael Rocheleau.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 5, 2007 in the chapel of the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home with Reverend Mickey Corbett officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
