Evelyn Atkinson Touchton, 95, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, February 12, 2009, in Lakeland following a lengthy illness. Born in Veazey, Greene County, Georgia on May 19, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Frederick William Atkinson Sr. and Mary Lou Hutchinson. Mrs. Touchton was postmaster at Barretts for a number of years. She helped her husband with the family farming operation, was a teacher and a member of NARFE and the Lowndes County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Touchton was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors are her daughters, Evelyn (Lyn) Young of Ray City, Sallie V. Exum of Barretts; grandchildren and their spouses, Evelyn and Greg Werbaneth of Kansas City, Missouri, Carol and Marvin Jones of Columbia, South Carolina, Larry and Lisa Young of Ray City; daughter in law, Inez Steedley; foster grandchildren, Francine and Dennis Pickard, Freddie Steedley, Debbie and John Wingert all of Valdosta; brothers and sisters in law, Frederick and Dottie Atkinson of Valdosta, Julian Atkinson of West Lafayette, Louisiana, Sallie Boyette of Valdosta; numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Touchton was preceded in death by her husband, J. O. Touchton, foster son, Jimmie Steedley, two sons in law, Larry Young, Sr., and John Henry Exum, sister, Virginia McDonald, brothers, Monroe Atkinson and Wellington Atkinson.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church. Reverend Mike Fountain and Reverend Jim Schappaugh will officiate. Burial will follow at New Bethel Cemetery. Mrs. Touchton will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to service time.
