Eugene "Gene" Roberts, 80, of Quitman, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Langdale Hospice House. He was born on December 19, 1932 in Brooks County to the late Henry H. Roberts and Della Sweat Roberts Hiers. Mr. Roberts was a former small-business owner who had been retired for many years. He served his country with the United States Army from 1952 to 1954; was a former Lion's Club member serving at the local and district levels; was the long-time coordinator for the Saturday Sunday School at the Presbyterian Home where interacting with the residents gave him immense joy in his retirement years. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Quitman United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Jarvis Roberts of Quitman; son, Gene Roberts (Noriko) and grandson, Miles of Seattle, Washington; daughter, Lyndra Eason (Eric) and grandson, Austin, and twin granddaughters, Ansley and Ashlyn of Locust Grove, GA; three brothers, Charles Roberts and Herbert Hiers (Cindy) of Valdosta and Johnny (Martha) Hiers of Lakeland, GA.; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Hiers and Bernice Roberts. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vonnie Godbold and brothers, James "Punk" Roberts, Joseph P. Hiers, Ralph Hiers.
Services for Gene Roberts will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Quitman United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Brown officiating. The burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Quitman United Methodist Church, marked for the Presbyterian Home Saturday Sunday School Outreach Missions.
