Ernestine Griffin Akridge, 91, of Valdosta, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness.
She was born October 18, 1923 in Morven, a daughter of James Edward and Mildred Mattox Griffin. She graduated from Georgia Southern College and had taught school in Morven and Nashville, before working with the FBI at the beginning of World War II. She and her High School sweetheart, Buford Butler "Bo" Akridge, were married at a military wedding ceremony in Seattle, Washington. Together their family traveled extensively throughout his naval career, returning to South Georgia following his retirement as Lt. Commander. After his death in 1980, Mrs. Akridge volunteered at Moody Air Force Base for a number of years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and reading.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Susan Holland and Ms. Debra Davis; one grandson, Sean Michael Davis, all of Valdosta; and many cousins and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Edward Griffin and Mildred Mattox Griffin Peeples; her husband, Buford B. "Bo" Akridge; her son, James Edward Akridge; her sister and brother-in-law, Martha Sue and Bill Lindgren; and her son-in-law, Charles H. Holland.
The Funeral Service for Mrs. Akridge will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Rev. David Tart officiating. Interment will follow at Campground Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
