Eric Meyer Burk, Jr., 86, of Valdosta was born October 30, 1930 to Eric Meyer and Louse Quirk Burk in Chattanooga, Tennessee and passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Fellowship Home. He graduated from Brown High School in Atlanta, Georgia and then went on to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in 1952. He married Louise Irene Garmon in 1954 and worked his way up through the ranks of two corporations during his business career, first with the Phillips Petroleum Company and finally with the Wickes Building and Lumber Corporation. During his life, Eric was a devoted husband and father to his wife and two children. He coached little league baseball, was an avid golfer, shared his love for sports with his family, and volunteered his fundraising efforts with the Humane Society of Valdosta/Lowndes County. During his retirement, Eric became a skilled golf club repairman and club builder working out of a shop he built in his garage. He also spent a lot of his retirement years working as a golf course marshall and starter. He was fondly referred to in the local golf community as "Mr. Eric".
Eric is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise, and his son Bob and his wife, Patricia Burk. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their spouses Joshua Seth and Kasey Musgrove Burk, Ryan and Hannah Burk Spell, Chad and Rachel Burk McLeroy, Jessica Powell, Erica Powell, Parker and Elizabeth Powell Albright as well as six great grandchildren, Jack Dawson Burk, Lucy Claire Burk, Madelyn Harper Burk, Charlotte Elouise Burk, Emerson Brady Spell and Ellis Ann Spell. Eric was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Carole, who died in October of 2016 and his sister, Buddy Burk Haines.
Visitation will be at 4922 Timberwood Drive, Hahira, Georgia on Monday, March 27th, from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service for Mr. Burk will be held at 10am, Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the Fellowship Home Chapel, 470 Fellowship Home Lane, Valdosta, GA with Dr. Clyde Stokes will officiating. The Burk family is requesting, in lieu of sending flowers, that donations be made to the Humane Society of Valdosta and Lowndes County, 307 East Jane Street, Valdosta, GA, 31601. The family would like to thank the LaHood family and the staff at Fellowship Home in Valdosta for the extra care and special attention they gave to Eric these past two years during his difficult struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
