EMERSON S. BURTON, 89, of Valdosta died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born on December 13, 1915 in Steubenville, Ohio to the late William Thomas and Mae Marie Barrett Burton and had lived in Cusseta, Georgia before moving to Valdosta several years ago. Mr. Burton was retired from the United States Army as a Master Sargeant and a Battillion Leader. He served in World War II having landed in Omaha Beach with the Amphibious Unit, served in the Korean Conflict with First Infantry Division. He was a Protestant and a member of the Ft. Benning Masonic Lodge #579 in Columbus, Georgia.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ingeborg E. Burton of Valdosta, one daughter in law, Sheila Beach Burton of Cusseta, two grandchildren, Jacob Beach and David Beach, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his only son, Emerson S. Burton, Jr. on September 4, 2001, a sister, Mae Brown and two brothers, Thomas Burton and Donald Burton.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Skip VanNus officiating. Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be conduted at the service. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
