Elsie Irene Carter, 96, of Echols County, died on Friday, November 28, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Born in Echols County to the late Arthur & Lula Lightsey Hughes, she had been a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Carter was a member of Sardis Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Billy F. & Nell Carter of Echols County; six grandchildren Donnie Atkins of Echols County, Marty Atkins of Echols County, Billy S. Carter of Echols County, Larry Carter of Orlando, FL, Tony & Nancy Carter of Echols County, and Ronny Carter of Echols County. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren, Melissa Atkins, Billy & Jennifer Carter, David Carter, Eric Atkins, Connie Carter, Paul Carter, Cody Carter and Kyle Carter, all of Echols County; a great great grandchild, Jayden Kay Carter of Echols County; two sisters, Bonnie Carter of Echols County and Eunice Glisson of Valdosta; two brothers, L. A. Hughes and Arthur Hughes, both of Valdosta; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Carter is preceded in death by her husband, Forest Carter and two daughters, Myrtle Blair and Merle Atkins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carter will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Sardis Baptist Church in Echols County. Rev. Marvin Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. Mrs. Carter will lie in state at the church from 2 p.m. until service time.
