Elmer W. (Pete) Knowles, 76 of Lake Park, died on Monday, June 20, 2005 at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born on October 8, 1928 in DeLand, FL, he was the son of the late Jesse James and Onnie Opal Bethea Knowles. He retired from Owens-Illinois as a power house operator. He was a member of the Paper, Pulp and Sulphate Union and Woodmen of the World. He was a member of Lake Park United Methodist Church and of the Mack Pierce Sunday School Class. Mr. Knowles was an avid gardener and NASCAR fan. He appreciated the wonderful care of the staff of Hospice of South Georgia, especially Betty Miller CNA.
Survivors are his wife, Alta Faye Singletary Knowles of Lake Park; son, Richard Elmer Knowles of Valdosta; daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Tommy Lumpkin of Valdosta, Mary and Ken Brown of Hilo, HI, Trina and Jim Cobb of Cuthbert; stepchildren, Leslie and Rich Carlson of River Ridge, LA, Elizabeth and Tim Hines of Valdosta, Scott Fairchild of Savannah; 21 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Lurine Fleming of Winter Garden, FL; and a sister-in-law Dot Knowles of Perry, FL. He was preceded in death by a son, Rusty Knowles Thompson, brothers, Marvin Knowles and Edwin Knowles, a granddaughter, Phoebe Humphrey, a grandson, Matt Thompson and his father and mother-in-law, Maurice and Chloe Singletary.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2005 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Michael P. Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home in Valdosta. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice House of South Georgia or the Lake Park United Methodist Church Building Fund.
