Elliot Bergman, 86, of Valdosta, a caring father, grandfather, husband and brother, passed away on December 6. He was an active, positive and inquisitive man who took great joy in helping others and spent his lifetime contributing to the betterment of the world through advancements in science.
Elliot was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York by his parents Louis and Anna. It was there that he met his wonderful wife of 63 years, Eleanor. She was full of energy and life, capturing his heart the day they met. They started a family - sons Peter, Eric and Phillip - and lived life to the fullest, including moving to England to pursue his career and traveling extensively in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world.
Elliot's lifelong work in science was at the core of his being. From his early years as an inquisitive youth (when he blew a hole in the wall of his family home), through decades of professional work as a trained chemist, and throughout his life, Elliot was energized and motivated by discovery and science. This included numerous patents, many of which were commercialized and used widely in industry and agriculture, which was a great source of pride for Elliot. When he retired from the traditional workforce he never stopped pursuing knowledge and scientific progress. Elliot regularly attended conferences on the science of aging, read research papers, and co-founded an organization aimed at promoting research on the biochemical mechanisms underlying aging.
Elliot's other passions were his community of friends, his children and grandchildren, and his favorite sport of fishing. He also found love once again later in life with his dear Betty, who brought him great joy, smiles and laughter, as he brought to her.
Elliot is survived by his sons Eric and Phillip; his grandchildren Andrew, Alison, Zivitte and Eleanor; his sister Eileen, and his nieces Michele and Joan and nephews Larry and Leon. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, his parents, Louis and Anna, and his son, Peter. Please consider making a donation in memory of Elliot to Temple Israel in Valdosta.
A graveside funeral for Elliot will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016 in the Hebrew section of Sunset Hill Cemetery. Rabbi Moshe Elbaz will officiate. This service will also include the unveiling of the marker of his beloved Eleanor's gravestone, who passed away last December.
