Ellen Harris Anderson, 90, of Valdosta, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the home of her son on January 12, 2010. Born September 4, 1919 she was the daughter of Henry Grady and Mary Ada Harris of Thomaston, Georgia. Ellen moved to Valdosta in 1939 with her husband Harry and they had 7 children. She returned to school when her youngest son was in kindergarten and finished her 4 year degree in Art Education and went on to receive her Masters degree from Florida State University. Following graduation she joined the faculty at Valdosta State College. After the death of her husband in 1970 Ellen left teaching to assist in the family business. A Charter Member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Ellen was a talented, caring mother, and an inspiration to her family.
Survivors are her four sons, Bucky Anderson and wife, Gloria, Dr. Tom Anderson and wife, Brenda, Dr. John Anderson and wife, Jan, Bill Anderson and wife, Ann; two daughters, Jean Smith and husband Glenn, Martha Welch and husband Charles; twenty one grandchildren, Leslie Vinson, Dr. Eric Anderson, Steven Bailey, Allison Bailey, Laura Wood, Clay Anderson, Katie Anderson, Bucky Anderson, Mary May, Brian Smith, Rachel Smith, Sarah Smith, Lee Anderson, Mae Anderson, Billie Anderson, Laura Welch, John Welch, Joe Welch, Kristin Walker, Matt Anderson, and Michael Anderson; eleven great grandchildren, Emily, Laura and Harris Vinson, William Ganas, Colleen, Chrissy, Bobby, and Brendan Wood, Tommy Anderson, Harrison Smith, and Alexander Pena. In addition to her husband and parents, Ellen was preceded in death by sisters, Mattie Belle, Billie Glickman, and daughter Virginia Anderson Bailey.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Willie Beasley will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. Donations may be made to Park Avenue United Methodist Church or to St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church.
