Ella Howell Wetherington, 91, of Valdosta died on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Langdale Hospice House following a lengthy illness. She was born on February 25, 1922 in Ocilla, Georgia to the late Oscar and Minnie Collins Howell. She moved to Valdosta from Ocilla in the early 1940's and worked early on as a nursing assistant with the Little Griffin Hospital. Miss Ella met her future husband on one of the city buses that ran in Valdosta at the time. Joseph F. Wetherington was the driver of the bus she took to work each morning. In order to get to know her better, Joe locked her in his bus one morning and drove her around town to find out more about her. Needless to say, the ploy worked. Miss Ella was a member of the large Howell family from Ocilla and thoroughly enjoyed the Howell family reunions. Miss Ella was also known for being an excellent cook and she loved her church and church family at Airport Church of Christ. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joey and Mary Kay Wetherington; a grandson, Jamie Wetherington; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Wetherington, Joe F. Wetherington and Celestie Wetherington all of Valdosta; two sisters, Ruby Roberts of Clinton, Tennessee and Florence Touchton of Jacksonville, Florida; three sisters-in-law, Sarah W. Noel and Lillian W. Dewey both of Brooks County and Edwina Wetherington of Lake Park; a special care giver, Crystal Ervin of Brooks County; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph F. Wetherington and ten siblings, Claude Howell, Jesse Howell, Grady Howell, Dan Howell, Lillie Stripling, Marguerite Hughes, Mary Frances Howell, Bertha Roberts, and Sally Mae Rowell, and Jewell H. Arnold.
Services for Ella Wetherington will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Keith Olbright officiating. The burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the McLane Funeral Home.
