Mrs. David Henry Tart, Jr., nee Elizabeth Brogden, 89, of Valdosta, died on Friday, December 23, 2005 at Smith Northview Hospital. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 30, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Emery N. and Beulah Thomas Brogden. Lib’s only brother, Emery Beulah Brogden, died as an infant. She grew up in downtown Jacksonville, attended Andrew Jackson High School and graduated in 1938 from Wesleyan College in Macon. While in college she met David Henry Tart, Jr. , a University of Georgia student. After graduation Lib and Henry were married and moved into a newly built two story home in Jacksonville, their wedding gift from Henry’s father.
Lib and her husband raised three sons, moving the family to Valdosta in 1953. With a passion for music and flowers, she was a faithful choir member at the Methodist church in Jacksonville and at First United Methodist Church in Valdosta. She was a patron of the Metropolitan Opera in New York and later in Atlanta for 30 years. Lib was active in both the Valdosta and the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. She was a National Flower Judge, officiating flower shows all over Georgia. For many years, Lib and her late husband Henry, with their Valdosta “football friends” attended the annual Georgia vs. Florida Fall Football Classic at the Gator Bowl. They also entertained regularly at a “co-op pot luck dinner” at their Twin Lakes cabin.
Mrs. Tart is survived by her sons, Reverend David H. Tart, III and Sylvia of Savannah, Attorney Thomas Brogden Tart of Orlando, and Timothy N. Tart, Sr. and Kathryn of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Major Nathan Tart and Emily of Japan, Meredith Tart of Athens, David Henry Tart, IV, of Marietta, Elizabeth Elaine Tart –Schoenfelder and Daniel of Denver, Colorado, and great grandson, Benjamin Tart.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida on Monday at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.
