Elizabeth A. “Liz” Cothron, 81, of Valdosta, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Born in Howell, then grew up in St. George, GA in Charlton County, she started playing basketball at an early age, playing first under the name of her older sister, then as herself to be able to play 7 years for St. George High School. After high school she taught typewriting for a few years before marrying her first husband in the mid 1960’s. She followed him to several locations during his military career. She had two children, Sheri and Tim during this time. Liz was divorced in 1980, and then married William Clayton Cothron, Sr. in 1982, in Macclenny, Florida. Clay was born the following year in Hahira. She lived the rest of her life in this area. Liz soon started driving a school bus for Lowndes County Schools, and drove for nearly 30 years before retiring in the early 2000’s. During these years she also worked as a seamstress from her home. Liz altered prom dresses, band uniforms, and other clothing for thousands of people over the years. She also worked in costuming at Wild Adventures for many years. Liz was devoted to her family, her children, and grandchildren. Helping others was her favorite pastime.
Liz is survived by son Clay Cothron, granddaughters, Beth (& Hunter) Parrish, and Julie Lokey; and her sister Wilahmena and her husband Johnny Lauramore, of Macclenny, FL and son in law, Mark Jackson of Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cothron, Sr., son Timothy Garner, and Daughter Sheri Lokey Jackson, and sister Hilda Lammons.
A funeral service for Liz at 11am on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Online condolences to the family may be shared at www.mclanefuneralservices.com.
