E. J. "Jimmy" Bennett, 89, of Valdosta, GA, passed away peacefully at Langdale Hospice House on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, after a period of declining health. He was born in Cook County on March 1st, 1935, to the late Ollie & Evie Bennett. After working on the farm with his father, he joined the US Army and served for 4 years, with two of those years being in the Army Reserves. He retired from American General Life after a 40-year career with the company. During his career he served as Vice President of Agency Administration in the company's corporate office in Jacksonville Florida. He also served as a regional manager and a district manager in Valdosta and Albany. He was a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters and served as President of the Albany chapter. In Albany, he also was an active member of the Exchange Club. Jimmy was a member of First Baptist Church of Valdosta.
After retiring, he and his wife Mary moved to the family farm and built their retirement home. They enjoyed the farm and enjoyed entertaining family and friends, especially their grandchildren. Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing and shooting dove and quail. During his time in Valdosta, he always enjoyed boating and skiing with his family and close work friends at Twin Lakes. Once his wife Mary passed away, he moved into the Orchard and enjoyed his men group that consisted of the late Floyd Moon, the late Jim Cleveland and Bob Copeland. They kept things moving and always had many great laughs, including a few tears along the way. Jimmy enjoyed meeting people and establishing new relationships. He simply loved people and always wanted to help others when he could.
He is survived by his daughter Pat (& Van) Buchanan of Lake Blackshear, son Terry (& Sherry) Bennett of Valdosta, grandchildren: Ashlee Mitchell (& Brandon) of Quitman, Wil Buchanan (& Sofia) of Delray Beach, FL, Hannah Stigall (& Jason) of Nashville TN, Jud Bennett (& Ansley) of Birmingham, AL, and Wes Buchanan (& Sarah), Albany. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Cort Littleton, Magdalena Buchanan, Ollie Bennett. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Cuppett Bennett; a son, Allen Bennett and his sister Ruby Lee Gano.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the caring staff of the Langdale Hospice House for their quality care and loving spirit. Also, to the First Baptist Church ministerial staff for their unwavering commitment to visiting and to ministering to our father during his illness. Your love and prayers were truly a blessing to him and to our family.
The service for Mr. Bennett will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 27, 2024, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Chuck Owens, Rev. Mac Weaver and Rev. Dennis Massey will officiate. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery in Hahira. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 10 am until service time on Saturday.
