Edward Santos Benavides, 81, of Valdosta died on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy illness. Born in Bridgeport, Texas, on July 30, 1928, he was the son of the late Nicanor and Paula Santos Benavides. Formerly of Laredo, Texas he joined the Military during WWII and was stationed at Moody Air Force Base. He made his home in Valdosta after his military service. He was employed for 37 years and 6 months with the Norfolk Southern Railway. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Mr. Benavides was a Mason, St. John the Baptist Lodge # 184 and an associate member of the Moody Lodge. He was Past Worshipful Master of St. John the Baptist Lodge, a member of Scottish Rite Temple, Hassan Temple, the Eastern Star, the Lions Club and the American Legion.
Survivors are his wife of 34 years, Victoria Q. Benavides of Valdosta; a brother, Nicanor Benavides of Kileen, Texas, a sister, Juanita B. Gomez of Kileen, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Reverend Richard Pieplow will officiate. Military Honors and Entombment will be at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Masonic Rites will be held on Friday evening at 5:45 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the Masonic rites until 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia or to Messiah Lutheran Church.
