Edith Smith

July 2, 1930 — August 10, 2005

Edith Smith, 75 of Valdosta died on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born on July 2, 1930 in Pavo, she was the daughter of the late George Edward, Sr. and Lettie Irene Leachman Smith. Mrs. Smith was employed with the Valdosta Daily Times for 47 years. She worked in bookkeeping accounting, wrote “The Bookworm” column, was secretary for the late Tenny Griffin and most recently served as the receptionist for the past 20 years. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Survivors are her husband, Richard D. Smith of Valdosta; daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis and Marvin Shelton, Kathryn “Desi” DeVane all of Valdosta; grandchildren, Jessica DeVane and Justin DeVane both of Valdosta; brother and sister-in-law, George E., Jr. and Ruth Smith of Valdosta; sister-in-law, Doris Reddick of Valdosta and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Alexander Smith, a son-in-law, Charles “Wink” DeVane, two brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2005 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dean Poling will officiate. Mrs. Smith will be cremated after the service according to her wishes. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
