Edgar Lewis “Ed” Cox, 92, of Valdosta, died on Monday, November 4, 2024, following a brief illness. Born in Pierson, FL to the late Jim & Pearl Owen Cox, he grew up in Pierson and in South Carolina. He graduated from Pierson High School where he played basketball and following graduation, Ed joined the U.S. Air Force. At his first station, in Greenville, SC, he met the former Betty Cook. They started dating and were married in Laurens, SC on July 11, 1952, and have been married for 72 years. During his 23-year Air Force career, Ed was stationed in such places as Anchorage (before Alaska was a state), Amarillo, TX, Bermuda, Florida, Arkansas, the Azores and near the end of his career, Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 and remained in Valdosta for retirement. He worked for several years in Civil Service at Moody; he also earned his bachelors degree in Business Administration from Valdosta State University. Later, he worked in the accounting department of Ray & Sons Air Conditioning until retirement in 1997. Ed was a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church, having been a member of the choir for many years and was an ordained Deacon. Working in his yard was a favorite pastime.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Cook Cox of Valdosta; three sons and daughters in law, Gary & Heidi Schroer Cox of Lake Park, Jeff & Bebe Allen Cox of Nashville, and Mark & Cel Cox of Albuquerque, NM a daughter and son in law, Pat & Gregg Ray of Nashville; eight grandchildren, Erik (& Lori) Cox, Heather (& Will) Neel, Seth (& Katie) Ray, Brittany (& Jason) Wiggins, Hailey (& Alex) Collins, Sarah Cox, Eirin Cox and Amanda Cox. Also surviving are 12 great grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 3 sisters, a daughter in law, Jo Karon Cox and a grandson in law, Chris Butler.
The funeral for Mr. Cox will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, November 9, 2024, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Robbie Foster will officiate. Burial will follow with military honors at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 pm until service time. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund.
