Earl Grey Johnson, 80, of Valdosta, died Thursday, June 30, 2005 at the Malcomn Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL after a brief illness. He was born in Hahira, GA on May 25, 1925 to the late James Early and Frankie Wetherington Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a Primitive Baptist and a US Army Veteran having served two enlistments in Japan from 1947 until 1950 and two tours of duty with the second armored division during the Korean Conflict from 1950 until 1954. After his discharge he worked as a professional golf caddy for 37 years with Tam O’Shanta Golf Resort in Brookville, Long Island, NY. His hobbies and enjoyment were raising rat terriers, gardening and watching pro golf tournaments on television.
Mr. Johnson is survived by three sisters, Marie Ellis of Joshua, TX, Willie Belle Clanton of Adel and Frankye J. Daugherty of Valdosta, six nieces, Karen Roquemore, Brenda Gail Clifton, Jessie Pearce, Retha Gray, Janice Thompson and Janet Boyd, ten nephews, Billy Ellis, Buddy Ellis, J. W. Ellis, Hiram Bembry, Jim Johnson, Gene Johnson, Tommy Clark, Jeff Daugherty, Bobby Daugherty and Brad Daugherty. He is preceded in death by one sister, Martha Eloise Bembry, two brothers, Raymond and Elwood Johnson and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 2, 2005 at three p. m. at the Martin McLane Funeral Home in Hahira with Elder Thad Marshall officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p. m. Friday at the funeral home.
