Earl Daniel Smith

EARL DANIEL SMITH, 87, of Lake Park, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Langdale Hospice House after several months of declining health. He was born on March 5, 1922 in Valdosta to the late Daniel U. "Dan" and Mattie Thomas Smith.

Earl was a graduate of Valdosta High School and North Georgia College, Dahlonega. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy, attached to the Marine Corp., in the South Pacific Theatre and returned to Pharmacy school upon his separation. He received his Pharmacy Degree from the University of Georgia, Athens, and worked with his father at Service Drug Co., downtown Valdosta, before opening Castle Park Pharmacy in 1957. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Smith was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church, where he had been President of his Sunday School Class (Christian Home Builders).

In addition to his wife of 67 years, Sara Studstill Smith, he is survived by two sons, Dan Smith and wife Betty Jean Rodgers Smith of Nahunta, and Randy Smith and wife Norma Knuth Smith of Valdosta; one daughter, Kathy S. Green and husband Rick Green of Hahira; five grandchildren, Stacy Evans and husband Rob of Valdosta, Jason Green of Duluth, Dr. Jonathan Smith and wife Betsy of Rochester, NY, Jeanie Altman and husband Tracy of Nahunta, and Ashley Smith of Augusta; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Dian Smith Brewton and husband Sam of Brevard, NC; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by his step-mother, Ada Belle "Webbie" Webb Smith.

Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 pm Wednesday, April 1, 2009, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. John McGowan officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
