Dr. Susan Wold, 64, of Valdosta, GA, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at her home.
She was born October 28, 1946 in Elgin, Illinois, a daughter of the late Frederick and Lois Reuter Eggebrecht and graduated from Elgin High School with the Class of 1964. She then followed her childhood dream of becoming a Nurse, earning her Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Nursing from the University of Minnesota. She was a nurse for 42 years and an educator for 35 years. Dr. Wold's clinical background and expertise included public health and school nursing. Her scholarly interests were nursing education, faculty issues, community water fluoridation, school health, and development of the web of causation for school violence. During her career she became a published author of nursing textbooks.
Dr. Wold held positions as professor and department chair at universities in Minnesota and Georgia, including, the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, MN, and Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA.
She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and Sigma Theta Tau International, Epsilon Pi, local chapter. She loved life, her family and friends, and enjoyed hosting parties and entertaining, spending time at her pool, sewing, writing, cooking, and animals.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nora and Todd Perry of Camp Lejeune, NC; one grandson, Joshua Perry; one sister, Carol Gebelt of Elgin, IL; nieces and nephews, Stephanie Ernst of Elgin, IL, C.J. Gebelt and wife Amanda of Cowan, TN, Katie Burcham and husband Michael of Wauconda, IL, and David Colizzo of Denver, CO; several grandnieces and grandnephews; many special friends, including Debra Baker of Valdosta, GA, Mickey Bloom of Excelsior, MN, and Jodi and Greg Harbin of Valdosta; and her beloved canine companion, Georgia. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Linda Colizzo, and a brother-in-law, John Gebelt.
A Celebration of her Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 8, 2011, in the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Chaplain Stephen Norris officiating. Dr. Wold's family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Thursday. A scholarship fund will be established at Valdosta State University in Dr. Wold's memory.
