Dr. Robert Lee Stump, Jr., passed away August 12, 2015, at Langdale Place surrounded by family and friends. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He was a man gifted with a great store of knowledge. He was filled with a sense of humility, integrity, and compassion. He embodied the good, the best, a pleasure to be around. He left behind great memories for all of us to remember.
Dr. Stump was born in Valdosta, Georgia on February 13, 1915 to Robert L. Stump Sr. and Louise Johnston Stump, and recently celebrated his 100th birthday. He was married to the late Marion Stringam Stump of St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Stump attended the Valdosta public schools, Emory University, and Emory Medical School. At Emory he sang in the Emory Glee Club. After serving at Wolf Creek Ordinance Depot as chief medical officer in World War II, he opened his general practice in Valdosta in 1945, and continued serving the Valdosta and Lowndes County community at Little Griffin Hospital, Pineview General Hospital, and eventually South Georgia Regional Hospital. He joined Dr. Alec Little, Dr. Van Bennett, and Dr. Mack Greer in establishing and staffing the first full time emergency room facility in Valdosta from 1971 to his retirement in 1987. He served as chief of staff at Pineview General from 1962 – 1964, and as Valdosta State College physician from 1954 – 1971.
A lifelong member of First Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Valdosta Rotary Club. Dr. Stump was recently awarded several awards and citations from the local, as well as national, Rotary Club for his long time services among his other affiliations are the Valdosta Country Club, the 12 Old Men and the Romeo Club.
An avid fisherman, he loved to fish. He fished at Whitewater for many years as well as in Cutdown Pond at his beloved family farm. He enjoyed Classical music, and could often be found sitting in his music room listening to his favorite recordings.
Dr. Stump is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Robert L. Stump, III and Janie Stump of Fort Valley, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law Marianne and Jimmy Paul of Atlanta; grandchildren Justin and Stephanie Paul of Seattle, Washington, Leslie and Fred Adler of Brooklyn, New York, David and Jennifer Stump of Valdosta, Jason and Jennifer Stump of Thomasville, Susanne and Sanford Zeigler of Menlo Park, California; niece Shirley and Evan Miller of Valdosta, nephew Tom and Jan Stump of Lake Park, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law Judy and Merlin Perry of Lenoir, North Carolina; seven great grandchildren Owen, Wyatt, Mazie, Blixa, Jack, Arlo, and Caroline; and kissing cousins Sally Kurrie and Susie Shingler of Valdosta.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Marion, his brother and sister-in-law Aubrey and Elizabeth Stump, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sugar and David Van Alstyne all of Valdosta.
What would he have said about such a long fulfilled life? "I enjoyed all of it"!
The family would like to thank Langdale Place, Rachel Morgan, Hospice, and sitters, Buffy, Judy and Sharon for the wonderful care they have extended to Dr. Stump.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015, at 11:00 o'clock a.m.at First Baptist Church in Valdosta. The family will receive friends after the service in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Hospice or the First Baptist Church of Valdosta. Carson McLane Funeral Home is serving the Stump family.
