Dr. Lucille A. Pollard, 94, of Valdosta passed away on April 20, 2012 at Langdale Hospice House. She was born on October 10, 1917 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky to the late Robert Miller and Susie Stopher Pollard also of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Along with her parents, Miss Pollard was preceded in death by her two brothers, Robert Willis Pollard and William Franklin Pollard. Miss Pollard was a resident of Valdosta since 1967. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in 1938 followed by a Masters in Educational Psychology from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. Lucille's work experience was vast. She taught elementary and high school physical education in both Greenville and Madison, Kentucky. She served as counselor and physical education instructor at Penn State Mental Hospital for five years and served as counselor in the admissions office at the University of Denver for six years. In 1952, Lucille joined the staff at Mercer University as the physical education instructor. She received her doctorate from the University of Georgia in 1965. Upon completion of her doctorate degree, she returned to Mercer University as Psychology Instructor where she remained until coming to Valdosta in 1967. She joined the staff at Valdosta State University and was a counselor and guidance instructor. She also taught educational psychology at VSU until she retired in 1984.
Lucille was a huge fan of all sports, but her true passion was golf. It was during her tenure at Mercer University she started playing and developed the love for the game which continued throughout her life. By 1956, she won her first championship in Macon. The passing of Lucille Pollard ends a long and marked era of local golf. Having joined the Valdosta Country Club in 1967, Lucille leaves a trail of wins that span over 45 years of membership. She won the Club Championship six times, with her most recent win coming in 2008 in the Ladies Invitational at the age of 90.
Dr. Pollard never met a stranger and her thirst for knowledge was never ending. She lived life to the fullest and will always have a special place in the hearts of those who knew her. She was a member of the First Christian Church.
She is survived by four cousins; Verna Hetzel of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Margaret Haag, Louise Huffman, and Louise Stopher all of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; special friends, Nancy Herring, Nina Hallman, and Penny and Nannette all of Valdosta.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Dr. Lucille Pollard at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the First Christian Church with Rev. Chris Michael officiating. The visitation will take place thirty minutes before service time at the church. A private burial of Dr. Pollard will be held at a later date.
