Dr. Joseph Samuel Houston, M.D., 87, of Valdosta died Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at his home. He was born on September 2, 1925 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida to the late William Herbert and Annie Jim Turner Houston. Dr. Houston practiced Psychiatry for many years and served as Chief of Psychiatry at Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville for many years. Dr. Houston served in the United States Coast Guard serving on the USS Orlando and graduated from the Medical College in Augusta in 1959. He loved woodworking and restoring antique cars. As a child he and his brother built a wooden Glider. Dr. Houston was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his two daughters and son in law, Susan Houston who had been his caretaker for the past two years of Valdosta, Debra Houston West and Greg West of Dothan, Alabama, two sons and daughter in law, Wallace Houston and Debra Moore Houston of McDonough, Dennis Houston of Griffin, a very special former daughter in law, Penni Houston of Atlanta, grandchildren, Heather Houston, Ava Castleberry and her husband, William M. Castleberry III, Jody Houston, Alden West, Warren Houston, Anna West and Riley Houston, great grandchildren, Gavin Backs, Emory Backs, Isabella Castleberry, Audrey Castleberry, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved Chihuahua of 12 years, Pepi. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lois Barton Houston, his sister, Betty Houston Hale and his brother, Dr. William Herbert Houston, Jr. M.D.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Friday, April 12, 2013 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Pastor Jimmy Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1-2pm at the funeral home.
